Battery
An intentional act causing harmful or offensive contact with another person.
The defendant must intend the contact, not the harm. Contact with anything closely connected to the plaintiff’s person (e.g., a hat or a cane being held) qualifies. Consent, self-defense, and defense of others are the classic affirmative defenses.
