Menarche

Menarche is the first menstrual period, typically occurring between ages 10 and 15 as a normal milestone of puberty. Early cycles are often irregular, which is expected, but the absence of menses by age 16 (primary amenorrhea) warrants evaluation. Anticipatory teaching about hygiene and normal cycle variation helps reduce a young person’s anxiety.
