Specimen

A specimen is a sample — blood, urine, sputum, wound drainage — collected for laboratory analysis. Collect cultures before the first antibiotic dose so the pathogen can still be detected, and label the container at the bedside in front of the client to prevent mislabeling errors. Correct technique, the right container, and proper timing and handling all keep the results valid.
