Nursing (NCLEX-RN) Formulas & Calculators
Plug in your numbers and see every result worked out, step by step — then use the reference below to recognise which formula a question is really asking for.

These calculators practice the standard NCLEX dosage formulas. Real medication administration must follow your facility’s policy, the order, and professional judgement — always double-check and use an independent verifier where required.
Desired over have
How much of a stock preparation to give: (desired ÷ have) × quantity. Quantity is the volume or tablet count that contains the “have” strength.
Amount to give
(desired ÷ have) × quantity
IV pump rate (mL/hr)
Infusion volume divided by time.
Rate
volume ÷ time
Manual drip rate (gtt/min)
Gravity tubing: (volume × drop factor) ÷ time, rounded to whole drops.
Drip rate
(volume × drop factor) ÷ minutes
Weight-based daily dose
Total daily dose by weight, split into equal doses.
Total daily dose
dose/kg × weight
Per dose
total ÷ doses per day
Formula reference
What each formula means and when to reach for it on exam day.
-
Desired over have
amount = (desired ÷ have) × quantity
How much of a stock preparation to administer.
When: The workhorse formula for tablets and liquids.
-
IV pump rate
mL/hr = volume (mL) ÷ time (hr)
The rate to program on an infusion pump.
When: Continuous infusions ordered over a number of hours.
-
Manual drip rate
gtt/min = (volume × drop factor) ÷ time (min)
Drops per minute for gravity tubing; round to whole drops.
When: Gravity infusions where you count the drip chamber.
-
Weight-based dose
dose = dose-per-kg × weight (kg)
Total dose scaled to the patient’s weight.
When: Pediatric and weight-based medication orders.
-
Daily dose, divided
per dose = (dose-per-kg/day × weight) ÷ doses/day
Each administration when a daily dose is split evenly.
When: Orders written per day but given several times daily.
-
Safe-dose check
compare ordered dose vs. recommended mg/kg range
Confirms an order falls within the safe range before giving it.
When: NGN safety items — verify before administering.
Frequently asked questions
- What dosage calculation formulas are on the NCLEX-RN?
- Desired-over-have, IV pump rate (mL/hr), manual drip rate (gtt/min), weight-based dosing (mg/kg), and safe-dose-range checks. Pharmacological and parenteral therapies is a scored content area, so expect medication math.
- Can I use a calculator on the NCLEX?
- Yes. An on-screen calculator is available throughout the exam for dosage, IV-rate, and other calculations — but you still need to know which formula a question is asking for.
