Prevention

Actions that reduce disease risk or limit its progression.

Prevention encompasses actions that reduce disease risk or limit its progression, organized into three levels. Primary prevention stops disease before it starts (immunizations, healthy diet, seatbelts); secondary prevention detects disease early when it is most treatable (screening tests like mammograms and blood pressure checks); and tertiary prevention limits disability and restores function after disease is established (rehabilitation, managing chronic illness). Matching the correct level of prevention to a given client scenario is a frequently tested concept.
