Homeostasis
The dynamic process by which the body maintains a stable internal environment through integrated physiological feedback mechanisms.
The NCLEX rarely asks “define homeostasis”; instead it hides the concept inside compensation versus correction items. The tell is a trend question: an ABG drifts but pH is back in 7.35–7.45 because a second system has stepped in — the lungs buffer within minutes, the kidneys over hours to days. Recognize that a normal pH with abnormal CO2 and HCO3 means full compensation, not a healthy client (the pH usually still sits on the side of the original disorder), so you keep monitoring rather than treat the number. The priority answer almost always favors assessing the trend and protecting airway/perfusion over a one-time intervention.
The classic trap is reading every lab in isolation. Acidosis (pH below 7.35) and alkalosis (pH above 7.45) are the failures of homeostasis this concept predicts, and edema is interstitial fluid that daily weight (same scale, same time) tracks most reliably — note that ~10% fluid gain can precede visible swelling. Hook: homeostasis defends a set point like a thermostat, nudging the regulated variable back toward range instead of the visible symptom.
