Crisis

An acute response to an event that overwhelms a person's usual coping.

A crisis is an acute response to an event that overwhelms a person’s usual coping mechanisms, leaving them temporarily unable to function. It is self-limiting, usually resolving within four to six weeks, and can become an opportunity for growth or, if unsupported, lead to deterioration. Crisis intervention is short-term and reality-focused, centering first on immediate safety and then on concrete problem-solving and mobilizing the client’s existing supports.
