Grief

The emotional response to a loss.

Grief is the emotional response to a loss and is a normal, individual process that has no fixed timeline or required sequence of stages. The nurse’s role is to support — not rush or direct — the process, offering presence, active listening, and acceptance of whatever feelings the client expresses. Recognizing complicated or prolonged grief, where functioning stays impaired well beyond the expected course, helps the nurse make appropriate referrals for counseling or therapy.
