Paracentesis

Needle aspiration of fluid from the peritoneal cavity.

Paracentesis is needle aspiration of fluid from the peritoneal cavity, commonly to relieve ascites or obtain fluid for analysis. Have the client void immediately before the procedure to reduce the risk of bladder puncture, and monitor for hypotension afterward. Removing large fluid volumes can trigger fluid shifts and hypovolemia, so assess vital signs and the puncture site closely.
