Grief

The emotional response to a loss.

Grief is the emotional response to a loss, and it follows no fixed timeline or set sequence of stages. The nurse’s role is to support the process — listening, allowing expression, and normalizing the feelings — not to rush or redirect it. Complicated or prolonged grief that impairs functioning warrants referral to mental-health services.
