Coping

The strategies a person uses to manage stress.

Coping is the set of strategies a person uses to manage stress, and it can be adaptive (exercise, talking, problem-solving) or maladaptive (substance use, avoidance, aggression). During a crisis, identify and reinforce the healthy coping mechanisms the client already uses rather than imposing new ones. The nurse’s role is to support and strengthen adaptive strategies while gently redirecting maladaptive ones.
