Handwashing

Cleansing the hands to remove pathogens — the single most effective infection-control measure.

Handwashing removes pathogens from the hands and is the single most effective measure for preventing the spread of infection. Use soap and water — not alcohol-based gel — when caring for clients with C. difficile or other spore-forming organisms, since gel does not kill spores. Perform hand hygiene before and after every client contact and after removing gloves, which are not a substitute for clean hands.
