Sterile means free of all microorganisms, including spores, and is the standard for invasive procedures such as catheter insertion and surgery. Open and keep sterile fields above waist level and in sight, and treat the outer 1-inch border of the field as contaminated. Once a sterile field drops below the waist, is turned away from, or is out of sight, it is considered contaminated and must be replaced.
