Crisis

An acute response to an event that overwhelms a person's usual coping.

A crisis is an acute reaction to an event that overwhelms a person’s usual coping abilities. Crisis intervention is short-term and reality-focused, prioritizing immediate safety and concrete problem-solving rather than long-term insight. A crisis is self-limiting and usually resolves within 4–6 weeks, after which the person returns to, or below, their previous level of functioning.
